The Apostle Peter
Many false doctrines and heresies were created in the name of some good persons. For example, heresies and false doctrines were made by calling a good woman, Mary, the mother of God; and calling Peter the first pope and the keeper of the gate of Heaven, etc., etc.
No matter how important is Peter the Apostle, he has neither power nor authority to save anyone. He has no power or authority to let anyone enter the gate of Heaven. In fact, I personally believe the Apostle Paul is greater than Peter in the Kingdom of God; but remember it is only my opinion, the Bible does not say so.
The Roman Catholic Church made the most false doctrines about the Apostle Peter which are contrary to the Word of God. Firstly, Peter was never the pope. The doctrine of the pope does not exist in the Bible and the Word of God does not recognize a pope or any pope past or present. Peter was married as the Bible says, his mother-in-law was ill and Jesus cured her. The doctrine of celibacy is contrary to the teaching of the Bible. Peter is not the one who keeps the gate of Heaven. Peter cannot save you, Jesus Christ does. This correction about Peter is made not because I do not respect Peter; I respect Peter as an Apostle of Jesus Christ for what he is, not for what he is not. No one in heaven or on earth can replace or represent Jesus Christ as the Head of the Church. Since the ascension of Jesus Christ and beginning at the Pentocost, the Holy Spirit represents Jesus Christ on earth and the Holy Spirit lives in believers. The idea of pope is pagan and un-Scriptural and contrary to the teachings of the Bible.
1. Peter was a fisherman.
Mat 4:18, “Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.”
This does not mean being a fisherman is something lowly or base. All legitimate occupations even street sweeper or garbage collector are honorable. It is the corrupt officials and business crooks and criminals who are disgraced and dishonorable.
2. Peter’s mother-in-law was sick.
Mat 8:14, “When Jesus came into Peter's home, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever.”
Note: The Roman Catholic Church claims that Peter was their first pope. There are two big blunders:
(A.) Peter was never a pope, he was one of the twelve apostles. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church, and the Holy Spirit is the sole Representative of Christ on earth.
(B.) Peter was married, a pope was not supposed to be married. The celibacy doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church is un-Scriptural. There have been many news reports about how many Catholic priests and nuns raped boys and girls, young men and women which are tragic and pathetic results of a false doctrine. The worst part is that the Catholic Church has been covering up for their priests and nuns for decades or centuries.
3. Peter the first Apostle.
Mat 10:2, “Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother.”
Note: This simply means Peter ranks first in chronological sequence as Jesus called and selected the twelve apostles. In many ways Paul appears to be the greatest of the apostles. For example, Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write more of New Testament books, had deeper knowledge of the mystery of Christ, had performed more mighty miracles and had suffered for Christ more than any other apostle.
4. Peter walked on the water to go to Jesus.
Mat 14:29, “And He (Christ) said: Come! And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.”
Note: Peter was brave and daring, however he sank when he looked at threatening environment. Peter knew how to pray: Lord, save me! When I was a child I was almost drowned too, I also learned to pray Lord, save me. Preachers did not make it clear; you do not have to cry out loud when you pray. I cried out loud to the Lord when drowning and I was filled with water and had to be pumped. The Lord did save me until today. The Lord saved my life many times in America and elsewhere.
5. Peter declared that Jesus was the Christ.
Mat 16:16, “And Simon Peter answered and said: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Note: This confession of faith in Jesus Christ is what Christians believe from the beginning. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. The Son of God is the title of Jesus Christ that no one can claim.
6. Peter was a stone, not the rock.
Mat 16:18, “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.”
Note: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that Peter was the rock whereupon the Church was built. It was not so. Peter was only a stone (Petros), but Christ is the Rock (Petra).
1 Cr 10:4, “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that Spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” The valid principle of interpreting the Bible is to let the Bible explain itself. Whatever the Scripture says is so. Whatever man or institution that teaches contrary to the Word of God is false and unacceptable and to be rejected. I reject the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church that Peter is the rock because Jesus Christ is the Rock as it is written in the Word of God.
Psa 95:1,“O come, let us sing for joy to the LORD, let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.”
Note: Since ancient times, the Lord God Almighty is the Rock of our salvation. The Bible is consistently right. Peter could not be the rock, and the Roman Catholic Church is absolutely wrong. Let us sing for joy to the Lord, and let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
7. Christ rebuked Peter for not setting his mind on God’s interests.
Note: Christ said to Peter, Get behind Me, Satan! This does not mean that Peter was Satan. It means that Peter’s idea (what he said and did) was originated by Satan. We should not be a stumbling block to anyone who wants to do God’s will. We should set our mind on God’s interests. Preachers of prosperity gospel probably originated in America, such as Robert Schuller of defunct Crystal Cathedral, etc. set their mind on monetary and earthly things. Both preachers and followers of prosperity gospel want to get rich in this world. They have failed in disgrace.
8. Jesus took Peter, James and John to the Transfiguration.
Mat 17:1, “Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.”
Note: These three disciples were closest to our Lord and they saw the glory of Christ. Peter was wrong to put Christ on the same par with Moses and Elijah. The voice came from heaven corrected Peter.
Later Peter wrote the following before he passed into glory:
2Pe 1:16-18, “For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory, when there came such a voice to Him from the Excellent Glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with Him in the holy mount.”
9. Peter asked how often he should forgive his brother.
Mat 18:21, “Then Peter came and said to Him: Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”
Note: Mat 18:22, “Jesus said to him: I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” Although seventy times seven are 490, I suspect it idiomatically means unlimitedly.
10. Peter had left all and followed Christ.
Mar 10:28, “Peter began to say to Him (Christ): Behold, we have left everything and followed You.”
Act 3:6, “But Peter said: Silver and gold I have none, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene--walk!”
Note: The Apostle Peter never got rich during his lifetime. Peter never lived in a palace like the Vatican. Peter did not have gold telephone. There are some preachers and church leaders who got rich today. Something is seriously wrong with any preacher who became a millionaire by preaching the Gospel. But the rewards of Peter in heaven are great, being an Apostle of the twelve.
11. Peter and all the disciples pledged loyalty to Christ.
Mat 26:35, “Peter said to Him (Christ): Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You. All the disciples said the same thing too.”
Note: If the Bible were like other books, the authors would not write about their weaknesses. We often put too much confidence in ourselves: exaggerating our strengths and underestimating our weaknesses.
1 Cr 10:12, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.”
If we stand it is because of the strength of the Lord; if we fall it is because of our weaknesses.
12. Peter and the two disciples could not keep watch.
Mat 26:40, “And He (Christ) came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter: So, you could not keep watch with Me for one hour?”
Figuratively speaking, Christians must keep watch and wait for the coming of Jesus Christ. When I was little I was afraid to sleep lest Jesus Christ comes and I was asleep. Silly preachers did not make clear the Word of God. If you have the Spirit of Christ in you even you sleep when Jesus Christ comes the second time, you will hear the trumpet call and wake up and be transformed to meet the Lord in the space.
13. Peter followed from afar off.
Mat 26:58, “But Peter was following Him (Christ) at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome.”
Question: How close are you to the Lord? Do you follow the Lord from afar off?
14. Peter cut off a high priest servant’s ear.
Jhn 18:26, “One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said: Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”
The United States as a society is getting more and more violent; more and more violent in crimes and conduct, and more and more violent in movies. Washington, Wall Street and Hollywood are the evil trinity that represent the love of power (violence), money and sex. Chinese movies producers are also infected by American violence in making so many violent and senseless movies to corrupt the people.
15. Peter remembered the word of Jesus and wept bitterly.
Mat 26:75, “And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said: Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly.
Note: If we remember the word of Jesus, we might not make a terrible mistake. If we have sinned and remember the word of Jesus, we might repent. Human acts often bring bitterness.
16. Peter and John saw the empty tomb.
Jhn 20:6, “Then Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there.”
Only the tomb of Jesus Christ was empty. Peter and John saw the empty tomb and the evidence of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
17. Jesus asked Peter whether he loved Him.
Jhn 21:15, “So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter: Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these? He said to Him: Yes, Lord; You know that I love You. He said to him: Feed My lambs.”
Note: Our words and deeds can prove whether we love the Lord or not. It is not possible that you love the Lord and worship idols at the same time. If you love the world, you cannot love God.
My Christian brothers and sisters, do you love the Lord? What have you suffered for Jesus? How can anyone love the Lord who is using the Gospel of Jesus Christ to get rich?
18. Peter preached to crowds: Repent and be baptized.
Act 2:38, “Peter said to them: Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Baptism cannot save anyone. This is the command of Jesus Christ, Repent and be baptized. Baptism symbolizes the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Believers identify themselves with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again for our justification. Baptism is also like a public marriage ceremony. You are baptized to declare to the world that you henceforth belong to Christ.
19. Peter healed a lame man at the Solomon porch.
Act 3:11, “While the lame man who was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the so-called portico of Solomon, full of amazement.”
The amazement is not Peter and John had power, the amazement is the power of Jesus Christ. The power of Jesus Christ saves us from the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and the peril of sin on the Day of Judgment.
20. Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Act 4:8, “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: Rulers and elders of the people of Israel.”
Note: Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and he preached with power and healed a lame man, but Peter this time did not speak in tongue. It is a fallacy to associate the filling or fullness of the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues. This is one of the false doctrines of Pentecostal church: the filling of the Holy Spirit is not for speaking in tongues but preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ with power. The other false doctrine is if you have faith God will always cure you. This is wrong, it is not always God's will to heal even if a believer has faith. Paul prayed three times for healing and Christ answered My grace is sufficient for you. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, not just to heal the sick. Do not stress what the Bible does not stress. Stress what the Bible stresses. American presidents and leaders who claim to be Christians are filled with the spirit of military supremacy and world domination.
21. By Peter’s rebuke, both Ananias and his wife died instantly.
Act 5:9, “Then Peter said to her: Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.”
Note: The sin to lie or tempt the Holy Spirit is deadly. Why there is not one American preacher who dares to preach against the sins of American presidents as they have been proven liars and killers since the end of World War II? There is not one Taiwanese preacher who has courage to preach against the sin of idolatry committed by Lee Teng-hui and Ma Ying-jeou although they claim to be Christians.
22. The shadow of Peter healed the sick.
Act 5:15, “To such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on any one of them.”
Note: It was not the shadow of Peter which had power to heal the sick; it was the power of Jesus Christ given to Peter. The shadows of many preachers shame the name of the Lord especially those who love money, power and sex.
23. Peter and apostles said we ought to obey God rather than men.
Act 5:29, “But Peter and the apostles answered: We ought to obey God rather than men.”
Note: The men represented by business and government are powerful and they control almost everything. It is very difficult for true believers to work for a corrupt government or a greedy industry like healthcare where doctors, hospital owners, drug and insurance companies and medical suppliers daily commit fraudulent and predatory practices to gauge and fleece the patients. However, we ought to obey God rather than men.
The hallmark of a true servant of Christ is to obey God rather than men. Obama does not obey God when he endorses homosexuality and supports legalization of same-sex marriage. American presidents do not obey God when they seek military supremacy and world domination. American presidents disobeyed God when they used false pretenses to attack and occupy other nations. Preachers do not obey God when they flatter the rich and powerful and being afraid to preach against the sins of the establishment. Why there is not one American preacher who comes out to preach against the sins and crimes of corrupt doctors, dentists, hospital owners, drug and insurance companies, labs and medical suppliers, etc. who suck the blood of American people by fraud and overcharge and have bankrupted millions of families?
Where is the preacher who obeys God and does not fear the power of American presidents?
24. Peter healed the paralytic Aeneas.
Act 9:34, “Peter said to him: Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your bed. Immediately he got up.”
Note: The day of the Lord is near. Christians everywhere, get up and proclaim the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ to the entire world.
25. Peter raised Dorcas from death.
Act 9:40, “But Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed, and turning to the body, he said: Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.”
Note: There are two deaths: physical and spiritual. Because all have sinned, so all have to die. If you repent and believe in Jesus Christ, you will receive the eternal life and never die again in Heaven.
26. The Spirit said to Peter.
Act 10:19, “While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him: Behold, three men are looking for you.”
Note: Peter was originally an impulsive man, later he became a thinking man. Peter thought on the vision. We should think on the Word of God constantly. When you think on the Word of God, it is more conducive for the Holy Spirit to speak to you. There are false preachers who teach the Holy Spirit does not speak to believers nowadays. It is wrong. If you do not know the Holy Spirit is in you and if you never heard the Spirit saying to you, you have not been born again and you are not saved. In the name of the Lord, I say to you the Holy Spirit speaks and leads and teaches the children of God even today. Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Sole Representative of Christ on earth.
27. Peter was also a man.
Act 10:25-26, “When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter raised him up, saying: Stand up; I too am a man.”
Note: The worship of apostles is forbidden. False preachers make their church members their disciples. False believers follow men. Do not be a disciple of anyone. Follow Jesus Christ the Great Shepherd. Do not worship man even if he is the president of the United States.
28. Peter perceived that God is no respecter of persons.
Act 10:34, 44-45; “Then Peter opened his mouth and said: Truly I perceive that God is no respecter of persons…While Peter spoke these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.”
Note: God does not respect you because you are the leader of a nation or the richest man on earth. God respects the humblest person who does the will of God.
29. The angel of the Lord delivered Peter from the prison.
Act 12:7, “And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter's side and woke him up, saying: Get up quickly. And his chains fell off his hands.”
Question: Do you know many are imprisoned by love of money, power and lust?
May God deliver us from the love of money, power and sex which are the prevailing values of America. America is the most secular nation on earth, a bad influence on the world.
30. God made choice that the Gentiles should hear the word of the Gospel and believe.
Act 15:7, “After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them: Brethren, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the Gospel and believe.”
Note: This is the core of Christianity that in Christ there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile, all are one in Christ.
31. Paul went up to Jerusalem to stay with Peter 15 days.
Gal 1:18, “Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days.”
Note: Peter and Paul stand for two different calls and missions: the former the apostle to the Jews, the latter the apostle to the Gentiles.
Gal 2:8, “For He (God) who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles.” When Paul went up to Jerusalem to stay with Peter 15 days? He was led by the Holy Spirit. A servant of Christ is led by the Holy Spirit in everything he does and everywhere he goes.
32. Peter was to be blamed.
Gal 2:11, “But when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was to be blamed.”
If Peter is the rock, how can he be blamed?
Gal 2:14, “But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the Gospel, I said to Peter in the presence of all: If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
Note: Even a great apostle was not perfect. No man is perfect in this world. Peter had faults and was to be blamed. Blessed are the servants of Christ who are blameless.
33. Peter acknowledged that God had given Paul wisdom.
2 Pe 3:15, “And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given to him has written to you.”
Note: There was no acrimony, animosity or jealousy between the two great Apostles, although not even an Apostle was perfect or perfected on earth. To admit your fault is not weakness bu strength. There should not be a confusion between the personal imperfection of an Apostle and the absolute perfection of the revelation of Jesus Christ to the Apostles including Peter, John and Paul. The Head of the Church is Jesus Christ, not Peter. True servants of Christ do not rival each other, do not seek the glory of men. It is sad to watch American preachers compete with each other and American churches rival each other. Respect must be given where respect is due. Because some people in the past wanted to be masters, that was how heresies were born and divisions made in the Church of Christ. That was how denominations came about. Denominations divide the church. Some claim their church is the only Church. Years ago I met people who claimed their church is the only church in Los Angeles. There are many fundamental churches which are sound in doctrine but they lack love in behavior. There are evangelicals who want to monopolize the Gospel and claim to have preached to more peoples than Apostle Paul. There are few in modern history the Lord had given wisdom in expounding the Word of God, they include G. Campbell Morgan, John Bunyan, J.C. Ryle, etc.
You do not use the teachings of man to test the Bible, you use the Word of God to test the teachings of man.
